WHO MIGHT NEED SPORTS-SPECIFIC PHYSICAL THERAPY?

As a physical therapist and long-distance triathlete, Sara started The Triathlete Project to help other athletes boost their sports performance efficiently and safely. If you’re an athlete, collaboration may be beneficial if you have…

SHIN SPLINTS
(Medial Tibial Stress Syndrome)

Nagging pain along the inner edge of your shin? Shin splints often show up with ramped-up training or poor mechanics. Strategies like analyzing your gait can help correct movement patterns, improve shock absorption, and build resilience so you can run pain-free.

PLANTAR FASCIITIS

That stabbing heel pain first thing in the morning isn't just annoying—it can derail your training. Targeted manual therapy, mobility work, and load management can ease symptoms and support long-term foot health.

RUNNER'S KNEE
(Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome)

A dull ache around or behind your kneecap during or after runs? Runner's knee often stems from poor alignment or muscle imbalances. Sports-specific physical therapy can identify the root cause and get you back on the road with less pain and better mechanics.

IT (Illotibial) BAND SYNDROME

Outside knee pain or tightness with running or cycling? Your IT Band might be overworking due to weak hips or inefficient stride patterns. A customized strength and mobility plan can rebalance your system and keep you logging miles.

SWIMMER'S SHOULDER

Because so many triathletes start with a running or cycling background, shoulder pinching or aching with swim strokes is a common challenge. This is often linked to poor shoulder blade control or overuse, so physical therapy assessments can be helpful in addressing shoulder mechanics, improving mobility, and building stability so you can train harder without pain.

FRONT HIP PAIN/LABRAL TEARS

Pinching, clicking, or sharp pain in the front of the hip can stem from labral irritation or poor hip positioning. We'll assess your movement patterns and create a strategy that protects the joint while keeping you strong and mobile.

CHRONIC OR RECURRING HAMSTRING STRAINS

Hamstring strains that never quite go away? There may be underlying issues like poor glute activation or altered pelvic mechanics. Sports-specific physical therapy helps restore proper load-sharing so you can sprint, climb, and run with confidence.

DIFFICULTY MAINTAINING AERO POSITION ON THE BIKE

Low back, neck, or hip discomfort in aero? It's often a combination of mobility restrictions and core control challenges. With guided physical therapy, you can improve endurance in position and reduce the aches that sabotage performance.

ACHILLES TENDINOPATHY

Tightness or pain in your Achilles that builds with training? Physical therapy can help calm inflammation, build tissue resilience, and correct movement mechanics to prevent recurrence.

LOW BACK PAIN

Whether it's from long rides, poor run form, or lifting routines, low back pain is common among triathletes. A sports-specific physical therapy plan targets your unique weak spots and helps keep your core and spine stable.

NECK AND SHOULDER TENSION ON THE BIKE

Soreness or fatigue in the neck and shoulders during rides? We'll work on postural endurance, upper back strength, and bike fit strategies so you can stay focused on speed, not stiffness.

FOOT NUMBNESS OR TINGLING DURING RIDES

That buzzing or loss of sensation can come from nerve compression or bike fit issues. Sports-specific physical therapy helps identify the source and modify habits or gear to resolve it.

PELVIC FLOOR/CORE DYSFUNCTION

Especially postpartum or during high-volume training, you might notice leaking, pressure, or a lack of core control. Sports-specific PT can integrate pelvic health and core rehab into your performance training.
